In March of 2012, at the age of just 2, Maya was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. This diagnosis took her family completely by surprise. Before this diagnosis, Maya was a happy and seemingly healthy child.

This all changed very quickly. Within days of her diagnosis, Maya was admitted into the hospital for surgery. A port was surgically implanted in her chest to administer chemotherapy. While there, Maya also received her very first doses of chemotherapy.

Since that time, Maya has had to undergo a number of different procedures. She has had multiple bone marrow tests, spinal taps, and blood transfusions. She has also been given a number of different drugs. She takes medication orally, intravenously, and receives intrathecal injections (chemotherapy injected into her spine).

Of course, all this has been very difficult on little Maya. She has experienced and continues to experience a number of side effects from all of the medications. While she has some good days, a number of her days are spent sick at home. In addition, because of a very weakened immune system, Maya is not usually able to participate in activities with other children.

Maya will continue to be treated for leukemia over the course of the next three years. Her family has complete confidence that Maya will recover fully from leukemia and will be well again. They are aware though, that it will take a long time and the road will be difficult.

Maya is not alone. Many other children of all ages are suffering from leukemia and other forms of childhood cancer. Sadly, some children have already lost their battles.

Cancer is a diagnosis that affects the entire family in numerous ways. The emotional toll that cancer takes is, of course, the most difficult.  Cancer also places a tremendous financial burden on families though. Between parents' missed time from work and medical expenses not covered by insurance, cancer can easily bankrupt a family. The mission of Healing Maya is to ease the financial burden on Maya's family and on other families affected by childhood cancer.

The proceeds from all product sales and donations will go directly toward caring for Maya. Our ultimate goal is to be able to provide financial support to families who are struggling financially as a result of a child's cancer diagnosis.
